Trump's son-in-law Kushner begins peace push with Middle East talks

Trump's son-in-law Kushner begins peace push with Middle East talks

"After 20 years I have the privilege to be the Prime Minister who build a new settlement in Judea and Samaria", Netanyahu wrote.

Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon said the US push to revive the peace process appeared to be a serious effort.

The proposed new settlement will be located at the center of the West Bank, north of Palestinian administrative capital Ramallah, prompting Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now to warn that the move would contribute to the further "fragmentation" of the West Bank.

While both Netanyahu and Abbas say they're eager to revive peace talks under the new administration, any conciliatory tone evident during Trump's visit has evaporated.

On the eve of his arrival, Israel broke ground on a new West Bank settlement for residents of an illegally built outpost that was dismantled in February under orders from the Supreme Court. President Donald Trump's son in law and chief Mideast adviser, Jared Kushner, is headed to Jerusalem for his first working visit in hopes of laying the ground work for a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.

Abbas also asked Israel to reduce the electricity it sends to Gaza, covering about one-third of the territory's needs.

The White House said on Sunday that Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and advisor, would arrive in Israel on Wednesday and that he and Jason Greenblatt, a top USA national security aide who preceded him on Monday, would meet Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Kushner, a 36-year-old real estate developer with little experience of global diplomacy and peace negotiations, arrived in Israel early on Wednesday and will spend barely 20 hours on the ground - he departs shortly after midnight.

Kushner, 36, a real estate developer with little experience in worldwide diplomacy, planned to spend less than a day in Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The settlements include those that Israel considers legal as well as at least 100 wildcat outposts.

But Israel has not built a full-fledged new settlement since the 1990s.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who has accused the Security Council of "bashing Israel", called on the body to address the threat of Hamas. That plan also alluded to the "right to return" to Israel of millions of Palestinians and their descendants, a demand rejected across the Israeli political spectrum. At a White House meeting in February, Netanyahu warmly noted he had known Kushner since he was a child.
