Malan leads England to series win over South Africa

With the three-match series all square at 1-1, England captain Eoin Morgan took the controversial decision to drop himself, with his place going to Malan.

Morgan, who is fully fit, was replaced as captain by Jos Buttler, while Dawid Malan is the latest man to make his England debut.

Earlier this month, AB de Villiers issued an apology for South Africa's failure to reach the semi-finals of the just concluded ICC Champions Trophy cricket tournament in England and Wales.

AB be Villiers would miss the upcoming four-Test series against England as he is taking a break from cricket. Series decider. and the England Skipper is resting!

"We lost by 19 runs and I can think of 20-plus runs we threw away in the field with silly mistakes. I will wait until the final decision on the coach and things like that are made", he explained, with Russell Domingo's future already uncertain before he left the tour prior to the Proteas' three-run win in the second Twenty20 at Taunton on Friday after his mother was involved in a traffic accident.

Born in London but brought up in South Africa, Malan got off the mark in style by pulling Chris Morris for six over midwicket.

Faf du Plessis will lead a South Africa side sprinkled with new faces and England will be confident of claiming a first home Test series success over the Proteas since 1998.

Dawid Malan's fiery 78: There have been numerous instances where players have impressed in their debut innings.

But the young leg-spinner persevered and, after five deliveries that had gone for 18, he tossed up the final ball of the 11th over and was rewarded with his first global wicket as De Villiers found Hales on the midwicket boundary.

Alex Hales and Malan shared a second-wicket stand of 105 in 10.3 overs.

In the past, South African A team's have always been competitive, so the indifferent performances of the pipeline players is a huge concern.

By the time he was out, hoisting Imran Tahir high to long on where Dane Paterson took a running catch just inside the ropes, England were 127-3 in the 14th over, but ran out of steam.

"To play for your country is a fantastic achievement". It was a pretty good score, tough to score when they bowled their variations. "Hopefully they (England) rest a lot of other players for the next game again and I can get another shout". "There is pressure on you when you come in and you feel like you need to perform to show your case so that's a fantastic show of character for those guys".

Malan, who will play for Middlesex at Chelmsford today in their pink-ball County Championship match against leaders Essex, added: "I didn't expect to get 78 off 40-odd balls".
