Dozens injured in New York subway train derailment

NEW YORK (AP) - A subway train derailed near a station in Harlem on Tuesday, frightening passengers and resulting in minor injuries as hundreds of people were evacuated from trains along the subway line.

The MTA released a statement later that night to say the cause of the derailment was not a track defect, but instead 'appears to be human error, ' according to CBS New York.

At the time of the derailment, passengers reported their train auto filling with smoke, and some panicked straphangers forced their way out of the cars onto the tracks, reported the NY Daily News.

Passengers on the A train said it suddenly jerked and began shaking violently as it approached the station at 125th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue.

Navarro, meanwhile, said the derailment caused "extensive damage" to the tracks and other equipment.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who controls the subway system, has vowed to take emergency action to improve the system after it became clear that its aging infrastructure was failing.

The passengers inside the affected wagons, while being evacuated with the help of the emergency services, shared videos in their social networks. It said there was smoke but no fire.

The A train is one of the most used line by New Yorkers, because connects nearly all the boroughs.

One person, Ben MacKrell, tweeted out a picture showing the door of his train having been ripped off in the accident.
