Dozens of prospective jurors beg off 'Pharma Bro' case

Judge Kiyo Matsumoto, who is presiding over the trial of pharma entrepreneur and hedge fund manager Martin Shkreli in NY, will be polling about 140 prospective jurors in the case today, after Monday's jury selection came up empty.

FILE - In this Monday, June 19, 2017, file photo, former Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli, second from right, arrives at Brooklyn federal court with members of his legal team, in NY, for a pretrial conference in his securities fraud trial.

On Monday, jury selection for the trial of Shkreli kicked off, and it wasn't long before the excitement of seeing Shkreli brought to justice was dampened, ironically, due to how universally reviled he is. As CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals in 2015, he generated controversy for increasing the price of the drug Daraprim by 5,000 percent - from $13 to $750 per pill.

Many also thought Shkreli was responsible for the skyrocketing price of EpiPens, which isn't the case. He was banned from Twitter after harassing a female journalist.

"I think [Shkreli's] a very evil man", the first candidate told the judge, per the Daily Beast's report.

Once a jury is seated, the trial is expected to take around four to six weeks.

Court officers confiscated a copy of one of the NY tabloids that covered the first day of the trial from one of the potential jurors.

Shkreli, called "pharma bro" by some in news media, has also generated headlines with his activity on social media - even as defense attorneys have purportedly advised him to remain quiet outside of court.

Others said they had been affected personally by Shkreli's price increases.

Shkreli is accusing of lying to investors in a hedge fund he ran, charges unrelated to his drug pricing.

"I'm trying to erase that from my head", she said.

Shkreli, 34, is being accused of federal securities fraud.

Turns out picking a jury for Martin Shkreli, who's been called the "most-hated man in America", is hard.

Prosecutors say Shkreli lied to investors at MSMB Capital and MSMB Healthcare about the performance and assets of the investment funds and used money from Retrophin to pay off MSMB investors as well as Shkreli's personal loans and other debts.

"Unfortunately, the Twitter history is just horrific", Brafman said. Shkreli was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in December 2015 on charges that he used shares of Retrophin to settle debts he incurred while running his hedge fund, MSMB Capital Management. Another said he's "the most hated man in America".

California state health officials say 111 terminally ill people took drugs to end their lives since the practice became legal l.
