European firms hit by 'massive' cyber attack

European firms hit by 'massive' cyber attack

"We advise all companies to update their Windows software, to check their security solutions and ensure they have back up and ransomware detection in place", Kaspersky said.

Danish shipping and logistics company Maersk has reported that its systems are down across multiple sites and businesses.

French construction materials company St Gobain said it had also fallen victim.

At this point, it remains unclear who is behind the attack.

"As ransomware also typically spreads via email, customers should exercise caution when opening unknown files", the Microsoft spokesperson said.

Once infected by the ransomware, the systems are locked and a demand of United States dollars 300 in Bitcoins is made to recover the files. In Russia, the malware hit companies such as Mars, Nivea and Mondelez International, according to the Tass news agency.

The only way to regain access to computer files, once the malware has taken over a system, is to pay an approximately $300 ransom using Bitcoin.

Experts are calling the latest attack Petya, according to The New York Times, which reports that the hackers' identities aren't known.

Security firm Kaspersky cited its data to say that about 2,000 systems were impacted as of Tuesday, with organisations in Russian Federation and Ukraine being hit, the hardest. The ransomware uses the similar loophole found in Windows, which WannaCry used to carry out a massive attack. Company officials said the incident is under investigation.

"We also have a network "down", Rozenko said on Facebook. "We stand ready to support any requests for assistance".

Ukraine's security council secretary said an hour after the news broke: It is possible to talk of Russian fingerprints.

A global cyberattack that started in Europe is spreading to major government agencies and worldwide companies.

The National Bank of Ukraine warned financial institutions and related firms that they may experience difficulty in their operations, but they are "confident" that the country's banking infrastructure is "securely protected from cyberattacks and any attempts to perform hacker attacks will be efficiently warded off". So far, the country's central bank, local metro and Kiev's Boryspil Airport have been hit, with various other companies also claiming they have suffered the same fate.

The government's computer network went down as well, and Groysman posted a picture on Twitter of a computer screen with an error message.
