Firefighters battle wildfires in Utah, Arizona, California

Almost 1,000 firefighters battled a Utah wildfire that grew Sunday morning that has prompted the evacuation of over a 1,000 people from hundreds of homes and cabins.

Fire crews return from fighting a wildfire near the ski town of Brian Head Tuesday, June 27, 2017, in Panguitch, Utah.

The communities of Pine Flat and Breezy Pines already have been evacuated with potential evacuations ordered for Walker, Potato Patch Campground, Mountain Pines Acres and Mount Union if the fire continues to grow, Yavapai County spokesman David McAtee said.

Bloch said his group hasn't challenged logging in the area of the Utah fire in two decades.

Wildfire crews in southern Utah braced themselves Monday for the possibility that winds might expand the Brian Head fire northward.

Officials have said the fire was started June 17 by someone using a weed-burning torch.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the blaze broke out at 3 p.m. Monday and within two hours had grown to 125 acres and is threatening structures.

More than 900 personnel are battling the fire, which started June 7.

By Tuesday evening, more than 1,600 firefighters were assigned to the conflagration, backed by an aerial force of 13 water-dropping helicopters.

Nearly 300 miles north of the Frye Fire, the Goodwin Fire in Mayer, Arizona gained ground on Tuesday night, authorities said. The fire is about 9 percent contained.

Firefighters working in high temperatures are battling the wildfire in the Beaumont area of Riverside County, where residents have been warned they may need to evacuate.

Officials say crews have stopped the fire from advancing and on Wednesday were trying to put out areas still burning or smoldering within the fire's perimeter.

The Brian Head Fire is one of several wildfires affecting the U.S. Southwest: the Goodwin Fire in Arizona's Prescott National Forest has burned more than 18,000 acres; the Frye Fire in Arizona's Coronado National Forest has burned more than 38,500 acres; the Cole Creek Fire in Nevada has burned more than 4,500 acres; and the Holcomb Fire in California's San Bernardino National Forest has burned more than, 1500 acres.

The fire is the largest in the nation at 78 square miles (201 square kilometers). Mayer is located about 70 miles north of Phoenix. Firefighters in Idaho battled five lightning-sparked wildfires burning in grass and brush.

The fire has reached into remote areas of Dixie National Forest, where heavy fuel is continuing to feed it. Briggs said when it emerges from there, firefighters hope to get a better handle on it as it moves into lighter sagebrush.
