Florida beats LSU 6-1 at CWS for 1st national championship

Reynolds gave up two early singles, but faced the minimum nine batters through three innings after his catcher Michael Papierski gunned out one runner trying to steal and another seeking to advance on a pitch in the dirt. They are a win away from their first CWS championship in program history.

After winning Game 1 of the College World Series Finals 4-3 on Monday, the Gators ended the best-of-three series with another victory over their SEC rival Tuesday. The Gators are 19-7 in one-run games this year.LSU lost the first game of five three-game series this season.

"Just a gritty group, that's all I can say", said O'Sullivan, the 10th-year coach who had brought the Gators to Omaha six of the past eight years. They'd been to the World Series in Omaha 11 times and had previously made it to the finals in 2005 and 2011, but came up short.

"I think Antoine's kind of kicking himself a little bit for not taking third on that ball", coach Paul Mainieri said.

"I'm just so happy for our players, it's all about them", O'Sullivan said in an on-field interview. He works hard, and he has had several teams that maybe were even better than this team and sat up here as disappointed as I am right now. You don't get to make mistakes in championships. Dyson (4-0) allowed three hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out two in six-plus innings.

Florida rallied for four runs off LSU freshman phenom Zack Hess in its half of the eighth. Liput made it a 2-0 game in the second with a two-out RBI single that scored Horvath, who was picked off first but reached second on a throwing error by first baseman Nick Coomes. The missed opportunities by the Tigers have put them in a hole, and they will now need to once again win two straight games against a top team in the country to be crowned champions. Jackson Kowar got the final out and Florida won their first national baseball championship, joining just a handful of schools who have won national titles in football, basketball and baseball.

The returning Gators did not wither, in large part because of O'Sullivan's unwavering confidence in his pitching and defense - pillars of his reconstruction project at Florida - sprinkled with a dash of timely hitting. The Tigers clinched the SEC West and a share of the overall SEC crown by virtue of a dramatic road sweep of Mississippi State on the final weekend of the regular season.

After the leadoff double, Singer was replaced by sophomore Michael Byrne, who leads the Southeastern Conference in saves.

Down 2-1 in the seventh, LSU had what would have been the tying run sent back to third because of a runner interference call at second on a double-play ball.

"We needed to figure out our bullpen", O'Sullivan said. We always knew there was going to be one first team. "We had our struggles throughout the year offensively".

The Gators were able to strike again the bottom of the second inning with a Nick Horvath single, resulting him stealing second a few pitches later. "I told them before the season started we had the ingredients to pull this off".

Gators ace Alex Faedo was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, pitching 14 innings while allowing just 5 hits, no runs and racking up 22 strikeouts.
