Florida grades: 41 PBC schools improve, district keeps B rating

The Lake County school district earned a B from the the state for the 2016-17 school year, an improvement over last year's C, according to new grades released Wednesday by the state Department of Education. It is particularly important in identifying low-performing schools that need additional assistance to help their students reach their full potential.

The percentage of schools earning an "A" or "B" increased to 57 percent (1,834 schools), up from 46 percent (1,531 schools) in 2015-16. "Dr. Walt Griffin, Superintendent, Seminole County Public Schools", Seminole County Superintendent Dr. Walt Griffin said. The county has seven C schools and one D-rated.

Clay and Baker counties also maintained their B ratings.

While 22 schools in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade improved from a C to an A, three improved from a D to an A, and one school, Poinciana Park Elementary in Miami, leaped from an F to an A.

92% of elementary schools earned a letter grade of an "A", "B", or "C".

Florida's education laws recently changed, giving districts fewer years to turn around D-rated and F-rated schools.

Okeechobee County now is home to an A-rated school.

A larger share of Palm Beach and Miami Dade county schools also earned an A. nearly 38 percent in Miami Dade, up from 30 percent last year, and about 35 percent in Palm Beach County received the top ranking, an improvement from 30 percent last year. Additionally, they report 50 of Florida's school districts have no "F" graded schools in 2016-17.

It was the sixth year in a row that Flagler achieved a B grade.

Many district schools still struggle to bring up reading performance to grade-level proficiency, according to recently released test scores.

41 schools went up at least one grade.

In Broward, nearly 36 percent of schools serving populations in which at least 7 in 10 students are poor improved their letter grade.

Despite a district's limited purview over charter schools, district grades are affected by charter school grades.

Letter-grade increases were also seen at other districts in Central Florida. These schools in recent years received millions in private donations and public funds, including up to $17,000 per teacher in annual incentives. "I applaud the work of the previous administration and I am excited that we are well on our way to becoming a destination school district".
