Grenfell disaster panel chairman advised against retrofit sprinklers

Grenfell disaster panel chairman advised against retrofit sprinklers

Cladding on 120 different tower blocks has failed fire tests in the wake of a blaze that killed 79 people in London, showing a widespread breach of British building regulations over previous decades, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Wednesday.

The fire has led to safety checks across England.

The tragedy has prompted hard questions about building regulation and fire safety.

By Tuesday morning, tests had been carried out on cladding in 95 residential blocks across 32 local areas, all installed since around 2000 - and concluded that 100 percent of the materials were combustible.

Arconic said in a statement Monday that Reynobond PE, a kind of cladding used in the apartment building, would no longer be sold for use in high-rises.

The lack of sprinklers at Grenfell Tower is expected to be addressed by the forthcoming public inquiry.

As the Government continued to scrutinise fire safety at other high-rise blocks, it emerged the chairman of an expert panel had previously advised against retro-fitting sprinklers in such buildings. Our initial information is that aluminium composite material has been used at only one school.

The crisis has now spread to the Scottish Parliament - MSPs were told last week Scotland's more stringent building controls banned plastic-filled cladding on high-rise accommodation.

The minister also warned unsafe cladding "may not be a problem unique to social housing or tall buildings".

Police secures a high-rise residential building from which the city of Wuppertal evacuated around 80 people after it was found to contain flammable materials, in Wuppertal, Germany, June 27, 2017.

"However, for further reassurance, the Council has made a decision to send samples to an independent specialist to ensure that the most robust response is taken to protect our residents at all times".

She said: "We are many months from being able to provide a number which we believe accurately represents the total loss of life inside Grenfell Tower".

Thousands of residents from the Chalcots Estate in Camden, north London, were evacuated on Saturday, after an inspection showed four of the five towers were at risk over cladding, fire doors, gas pipes and insulation.
