Knicks rumors: Carmelo Anthony wants buyout, Rockets on horizon?

Three-plus years after returning to the franchise that he won two championships with as a player, Phil Jackson's run as New York Knicks team president has come to an end. Jackson earlier placed the two on the trading block. "I wish them and the Knicks organization all the best - today and always". The team was 80-166 in his three full seasons, including a franchise-worst 17-65 in 2014-15.

A week ago, Jackson confirmed that he would entertain trade offers for Porzingis amid speculation that he was irked over a missed exit meeting.

The decision, reported by the New York Daily News and ESPN, stems in part over a difference in opinion regarding Carmelo Anthony's future with the team.

In April, he called Mike Hamersky, a Knicks fan, an "a-hole" when Hamersky heckled him on the court, according to a report by the New York Post. But the real problem with the Knicks was that Jackson was off by a lot more years than that, ultimately stuck on an offense that the National Basketball Association has passed by, the triangle.

According to National Basketball Association sources, Dolan went back on his February promise to have Jackson fulfill the full five years of his contract because of new circumstances revolving around Jackson's public feuds with the Knicks' two best players, Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. The ESPN report says that some players and members of the coaching staff in NY had grown frustrated at Jackson's idea of playing a triangle offense in the middle of last season.

More of the blame could be shouldered by Jackson himself, who has failed to put together a winning season since becoming the president of the Knicks. ESPN's "First Take" co-host Stephen A. Smith said Jackson is showing us all "why he needs to get the hell out of NY quick, fast and in a hurry". "He's a unicorn and he's special". The Knicks wound up taking 18-year-old French point guard Frank Ntilikina, who spoke highly of the triangle and Jackson's belief in the scheme.

What the Knicks really need is leadership that quietly goes about its business and wins, a formula that has worked nicely in places such as San Antonio and Oakland.

Now, my personal view on this is that the days of a big city attracting free-agents and executives just due to their location are long gone. Noah - whom Jackson gave a puzzling four-year, $72 million contract last summer - will start the season by finishing out a 20-game suspension for violating the league's anti-drug policy. LeBron & Friends playing the twilight of their careers in NY likely likely wouldn't bring a title, but it'd be incredibly interesting to watch.
