Macron's government kicks off controversial labor reform

After choosing the relatively unknown Emmanuel Macron, 39, as president on May 7, French voters gave Mr. Macron's political coalition a victory in the first and second rounds of parliamentary voting, completed this past Sunday.

Macron also retweeted Schwarzenegger's selfie video.

In a branding gesture intentionally stolen from Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan, Macron and Schwarzenegger - using light-hearted humor and and an easy jest - announced plans to deliver a "green future" and address urgent "environmental issues" facing the planet. The pugnacious, Spanish-born Valls was Macron's boss when the now-president was economy minister and a fierce rivalry developed between them.

While holding his phone, Mr Schwarzenegger says: "I'm here with President Macron".

Macron has been pushing to maintain momentum generated by a global agreement to combat climate change reached in Paris in 2015, after President Donald Trump pulled the United States out, drawing condemnation from other leaders. In early June, Schwarzenegger criticized Trump's decision to exit the Paris agreement. That makes this moment in French history one of great promise.

Both Mr Macron and Mr Schwarzeneggar are known for their outspoken criticism of Mr Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate change agreement.

When Mr Trump announced earlier this month that the U.S. was withdrawing from the 2015 Paris climate agreement, Mr Macron said in a statement that the decision was "a mistake for the USA and for our planet".

They expect to get to work quickly tackling the government's proposed law on expanding police powers and a labor reform making it easier to hire and fire. "I honestly haven't asked him that specific question".

The actor-turned-Republican politician told reporters in Paris on Friday that he had a "wonderful" one-hour meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon's new hard-left movement and the far-right Front National were not able to confirm their strong results in the presidential election and secured a limited number of seats - 27 and 8, respectively.
