NHL: Vegas selects Garrison in expansion draft

Stanley Cup-winning goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, defensemen Marc Methot and Alexei Emelin, 30-goal scorer Jonathan Marchessault and forwards David Perron and James Neal are among the veterans selected by the Golden Knights in the National Hockey League expansion draft Wednesday night. Glass played for the Portland Winterhawks last season collecting 94 points (32 goals, 62 assists) and named team co-MVP during the 2016-2017 season.

During the 2017 National Hockey League awards show, the Vegas Golden Knights introduced their 30 expansion draft picks in front of their fans at T-Mobile Arena.

Here's the thing that maybe wasn't clear from the beginning: Not only were the Vegas Golden Knights getting to poach one player off every roster, they were also getting compensation (mostly draft picks) from the other 30 clubs in order to direct who they chose.

Vegas picked up three goalies, 14 forwards and 13 defensemen in the choices announced during the NHL's annual awards show.

McPhee's predecessor and successor with the Capitals: While it was a good night for McPhee, who previously held the same post in Washington, the expansion draft wasn't so kind to the man McPhee replaced with the Capitals (David Poile) and the one who stepped in after McPhee was sacked in 2014 (Brian MacLellan). Marc-Andre Fleury has been about an average starting goaltender the past few years. Defensemen Matt Dumba and Marco Scandella plus centers Eric Staal and Erik Haula were all intriguing candidates, but Vegas settled for forward Erik Haula and a conditional 2017 or 2018 third-round pick, which probably won't be almost as valuable.

It might be hard to argue against a strategy that allows for so many future opportunities, but a closer look at the numbers highlights the opportunity he had to craft one of the league's better blue lines, making the Golden Knights a potential playoff team in their inaugural season.

Working in McPhee's favour is that this year's free agent pool is thin.

"We knew we were going to lose something, so we felt let's do what we can to control what we give up", Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman told TampaBayLightning.com. Once Dallas and Calgary moved to address their needs between the pipes prior to the expansion draft, there wasn't going to be a bidding war among the teams that wanted an upgrade in net.

"I am really excited to get started". "I've been fortunate enough to play on great teams in a great organization, and I've had a lot of great teammates that taught me well".

"My skating has come along, and I could always shot the puck", he said.

In the wake of Vegas' expansion draft, New Jersey is on the clock with the No. 1 pick of the amateur draft beginning Friday night at the United Center. Strengthening his group up front is what McPhee will have to do with the draft picks he's amassing.

Fleury was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 National Hockey League draft.

The Golden Knights had center Cody Glass rated in their top five and got him at No. 6.

Lee Stempniak was the most appealing unprotected player on Carolina's roster, but the Hurricanes tempted the Golden Knights with a 2017 fifth-round draft pick to take forward Connor Brickley instead. Calvin Pickard from Colorado and Jean-Francois Berube from the New York Islanders are only 25, and each one could be Fleury's backup or trade bait.

Poile was recognized after the Predators' first Western Conference title and Stanley Cup Final appearance.

McPhee continued his moves Thursday, swinging two trades to add draft picks in place of claimed players who might not have made the Golden Knights' roster. They needed to keep their defense in tact, so someone was going to be left out, and James Neal was that guy. A 30-goal campaign is well within reach for the sniper this coming season. "It has been a fantastic experience", said owner Bill Foley.

"I'm really pleased with what's available", McPhee told reporters in Las Vegas on Sunday.
