NSA-linked tools used in new large-scale cyber attack

NSA-linked tools used in new large-scale cyber attack

Ukraine's central bank on Tuesday said a cyberattack hit several lenders in the country, hindering operations and leading the regulator to warn other financial institutions to tighten security measures.

Collins said "This is going to continue and we are going to see more increases with these types of cyber attacks in the next few months and years". It's always prudent to email that person to confirm they just sent you something. Once your computer gets infected, a ransomware encrypts crucial files and docs, after which it demands a ransom.

The Danish shipping giant said it had been hit across multiple regions by a computer outage. JNPT chairman Anil Diggikar told Reuters the port has been trying to clear containers manually and is operating at about a third of its capacity.

The Cadbury Factory in Tasmania is among the businesses effected. As the malware began to spread across the United States, it affected companies such as the drugmaker Merck and Mondelez International, the owner of food brands such as Oreo and Nabisco.

Russian Federation and Ukraine are most affected with the thousands of Ransomware attack, according to security software maker Kaspersky Lab, with other countries including Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United States.

The number of victims is rapidly increasing, and it's quickly turning into a crisis - much like May's WannaCry attack that shut down networks across 150 countries.

As for why the strain has suddenly become more virulent, Bleeping Computer said it's likely the Petya author was inspired by the WannaCry attacks. He affirmed that the Petya ransomware is using the purportedly leaked NSA attack code to target the SMB 1 flaw.

Last month the UK's National Health Service was attacked by ransomware which locked hospital computers. It advised victims not to pay the extortion, saying that doing so did not guarantee access would be restored. DLA Piper said in a statement it was hit by a suspected malware attack and that it was "taking steps to remedy the issue".

Factory workers "weren't sure what it was but, as the night's gone on, they've realised there's been some significant attacks around the world", Short said.

He added that unlike WannaCry, there was no "kill switch" - a catch-all solution that would stop the malware.

Large-scale ransomware attacks will continue to happen because businesses still have holes in their systems and because government-grade hacking tools are widely available, said Jon DiMaggio, a threat intelligence researcher at Symantec.

"In Ireland, it seems mainly to have affected networks of global organisations", said Conor Flynn, managing director of Dublin-based Information Security Assurance Services.

It's still unclear where the ransomware attacks, which hold files hostage if companies or governments refuse to pay recompense (in this case $300 in Bitcoin for a decryption key), are originating.

"Perhaps you are busy looking for a way to recover your files, but don't waste your time".
