Petya cyber attack: Ransomware virus hits computer servers across globe

The virus, which locked up files at companies and government agencies including the Chernobyl nuclear site and demanded a payment worth $300, appeared similar to the WannaCry ransomware that swept the world last month, hitting more than 200,000 users in more than 150 countries. That might be because the email provider hosting that address, Berlin-based Posteo, pulled the plug on the account before the infection became widely known.

However, M.E.Doc has denied being the initial infection vector on its Facebook page.

An explanation of how to do this has been posted by security news website Bleeping Computer and has been backed up by several other security experts.

Following last month's WannaCry incident some of the blame was directed at United States intelligence agencies the CIA and the National Security Agency (NSA) who were accused of "stockpiling" software code which could be exploited by hackers.

Shipping giant Maersk is one of the big names that has fallen victim to a huge ransomware attack.

The full scope of damage wouldn't be known until Thursday when everyone gets back to work, Zhora said.

Companies don't patch for a variety of reasons: their machines don't support the patch, it's too expensive to do it, it might disrupt their services or they simply forget about an outdated computer on their network. "Attackers must have compromised their infrastructure", Chris Wysopal, founder of software security firm Veracode, wrote on Twitter.

The Petya virus has attacked the Ukrainian government, Auchan Hypermarkets, Privatbank and telecommunication operators, the Group-IB company said. The attack shut the terminal down on Tuesday afternoon.

By late Tuesday, roughly $8,500 had been deposited in Bitcoin accounts linked to the attack.

It's believed the issue has filtered down to Cadbury from their parent company Mondelz International, who were the original target of this arm of the attack.

The National Cyber Security Centre, part of intelligence agency GCHQ, said it was monitoring the current "global ransomware incident".

"The situation is under the complete control of cybersecurity experts and they are now working on recovering lost data", it said, adding that all "strategic enterprises" were functioning as normal.

Ukraine's prime minister says that a cyberattack affecting his country is "unprecedented", but "vital systems haven't been affected".

Russian oil producer Rosneft and Danish shipping company Maersk also say they face disruption, including its offices in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Companies in Denmark and Spain have also confirmed attacks by the same virus.

Government officials reported major disruption to the power grid, banks and government offices in Ukraine, where news of the attack first emerged on Tuesday. Russia's Rosneft energy company also reported falling victim to hacking, as did shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk, which said every branch of its business was affected.
