Project Fi Opened Up to All G Suite Users in US

But later this year, that practice will be ending. With removal of this restriction, G Suite users would not require signing up for a Google (gmail.com) account.

Gmail scanned only the emails of private users, business accounts being exempted.

The move represents a major change in advertising policy.

"This decision brings Gmail ads in line with how we personalise ads for other Google products", said Greene. They filed the complaint on behalf of all people who want a Gmail account but don't want their emails scanned under the service's Terms of Service.

It was somewhat useful to a point, but it has always been a concern for privacy advocates.

Google has been slapped with lawsuits over its covert scanning practices multiple times. In March, a federal judge rejected a proposed class-action settlement in the case.

However, the company's competitors like Amazon and Microsoft are now dominating the market. For example, Corporate Gmail doesn't mine emails for information. It's worth noting that G Suite account sign-ups are limited to USA users right now.

Google does note that Project Fi's group plans are still limited to just six users, so this may not be designed for use with large companies.

Greene said that Google now has more than 3 million paying customers for its G Suite service of productivity apps, which includes Google Docs, Drive, Calendar, Slides, and Sheets. Google will still scan the email content for anti-spam and anti-phishing purposes, as well as for malware detection.
