Russell Westbrook named MVP at NBA Awards show

The final chapter of Russell Westbrook's historic season was written Monday at the NBA's inaugural awards show, as the Oklahoma City Thunder point guard was named the 2016-17 Most Valuable Player. The Thunder star beat out James Harden and Kawhi Leonard for the honor, getting 69 out of a possible 101 first-place votes.

Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka were no longer part of the Oklahoma City Thunder roster, but Westbrook was able to bring his teammates together and convince them to chase a spot in the playoffs.

Westbrook averaged a triple-double throughout the regular season, finishing with an average of 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game, the first to do that since Oscar Robertson in 1962.

Westbrook and Durant were teammates for eight seasons with the Thunder from 2008-16.

". now to be standing here with this trophy next to me is a true blessing, man, and it's an unbelievable feeling, something that I can never imagine". Russell has incredible value to his team, but the player with the MOST value to their team, is in fact the King himself, but what is the fun in giving him the award every year? I was the one who taught you to dribble, to shoot hoops.

"You are fantastic, you're the MVP", she gushed. As the awards were being announced during the live telecast on TNT, players and fans around the world took to social media to congratulate the recipients and comment on the first ever National Basketball Association award show. "I want to thank my agent and my team". Antetokounmpo, nicknamed The Greek Freak, averaged 22.9 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists while also making his first-ever NBA All-Star team and All-NBA team.

After the debates of who should win the award were finally put to rest, the question of "does he deserve it?" surfaces.

Golden State's Draymond Green won the Defensive Player of the Year, ending Leonard's two-year run.
