Senate leaders scramble to save health bill amid defections

Senate leaders scramble to save health bill amid defections

The move comes amid growing doubts that Senate GOP leadership could garner enough support from reluctant moderates and conservatives alike to reach the 50 votes needed to pass the budget reconciliation measure.

The plan by McConnell (R-Ky.) to pass a replacement for Obamacare veered off track after five Republican senators said they would not vote to take up the bill this week, a day after a Congressional Budget Office analysis said it would cause 22 million to lose their insurance.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the Senate's health-care reform bill will bring the uninsured rate back to pre-Obamacare levels by 2026, resulting in 22 million people not having coverage due to "lower spending on Medicaid and substantially smaller average subsidies for coverage" in the individual market.

President Trump invited Republican senators to the White House late this afternoon to regroup.

Trump was his boosterish self at the meeting with Republican senators this afternoon, but he knows and cares so little about the details that I'm told he would agree with whatever was said, even if senators were directly contradicting one another.

According to a Lee aide briefed on the conversation, which lasted about 10 to 15 minutes, the majority of the call was about the middle-class voters who voted for Trump in 2016.

Senators have bristled at what they viewed as McConnell's secretive and rushed process, and several other senators said they wanted more time before voting.

Ryan told reporters on Tuesday: "I would not bet against Mitch McConnell".

The Senate bill would phase out that extra money Obama's law provides to 31 states that agreed to expand coverage under the federal-state Medicaid program.

Republican senators planned to travel to the White House later to meet with Mr Trump. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Cruz of Texas, and Mike Lee of Utah - blasted the bill for not fulfilling campaign pledges to repeal and replace Obamacare. President Trump will plead and cajole Republicans at the White House, and at some point in the next 24 hours or so he will likely begin to attack holdouts by name, while blaming Democrats for "obstruction".

The Senate GOP has delayed a vote on its health care legislation until after the July 4 recess, CBS News has confirmed.

McConnell is struggling to appease two factions in his party.

McConnell wants to win Senate passage this week.

USA stock prices fell on Tuesday after the decision to postpone the vote.

Before the Senate can begin debate on most legislation, the senators must either unanimously agree to consider it or the majority leader must offer a "motion to proceed" to consideration of that bill.

And she's not the only Republican senator who plans to do so.

Meanwhile, an analysis of premiums under the Senate bill by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation found more bad news for Republicans.
