UK high-rise fire: 120 towers fail safety tests

Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday Britain must hold a national investigation into exterior cladding used on high-rise buildings after all those checked after the deadly London tower block blaze this month failed safety tests.

The council will continue to sample and visually test other tower blocks in line with their own investigation and that of the Government.

Schools and hospitals may also do the same where they have concerns, with the Care Quality Commission having contacted more than 17,000 care homes, hospices and private hospitals to tell them to check fire safety procedures.

The blaze that engulfed the Grenfell Tower block on June 14 started with a faulty refrigerator on the fourth floor and spread to the top of the building within minutes.

On top of that decision, shares in the panel maker have reportedly plummeted by more than nine per cent since it was discovered that it supplied the panels for Grenfell Tower.

An independent panel will convene to suggest immediate safety action, chaired by former London fire commissioner Sir Ken Knight, who compiled a report on the Lakanal House fire in Camberwell.

In response to May's announcement, John Healey, Labour's shadow housing minister, said: "The Prime Minister promised that 100 tests a day could be done but two weeks on from the Grenfell Tower fire only 95 have been completed".

David Metcalfe, head of industry body the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology, said: 'There's nothing stopping you using timber on a high-rise.

The public inquiry into the disaster has yet to appoint a chairman, but No.10 said that the PM wanted residents closely involved in drafting its remit. With all these things coming up in the press, we know that God can over-ride.

Nonetheless, Arconic advised in one brochure seen by Reuters that combustible cladding materials were a fire risk in tall buildings and that, above 30m, non-combustible materials should be used.

NHS Improvement had written to all trusts in England to ask them to check the cladding.

The Grenfell Tower fire has led to many fire inspections across the country and now many other nations are trying to prevent another tragedy by making sure these materials are not part of buildings.

The Spalding hospital is managed by Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust. "We will fully support the authorities as they investigate this tragedy".
