Ukraine's prime minister, Volodymyr Groysman, described the attacks on his country as "unprecedented", with everything from the Ukrainian power grid, to the country's banks, government offices, and global airport affected.

In terms of government operations, the office of the Presidential Administration has reported that its IT team is closely monitoring the situation while some reports state that Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has been hacked.

India-based employees at Beiersdorf, makers of Nivea skin care products, and Reckitt Benckiser, which owns Enfamil and Lysol, told Reuters the ransomware attack had affected some of their systems.

Microsoft said the virus could spread through a flaw that was patched in a security update in March. The ransomware uses the similar loophole found in Windows, which WannaCry used to carry out a massive attack.

"It's a billion-dollar business and the more customers they have, the more advanced the future ransomware attacks will be".

A spokesperson for worldwide crime agency Europol said: "Europol is aware of multiple reports in the media regarding a developing ransomware attack, we are liaising with cyber units in the member states and key industry partners to establish the full nature of this attack at this time".

Government agencies across Ukraine reported being hit, including the public transportation system in Kiev, the state telecom company and the country's central bank.

Infected computers display a message demanding a Bitcoin ransom worth $300. Some experts are calling the latest virus Petya, but others suggest it could be another type of ransomware. But according to security firm Kaspersky Lab, preliminary findings indicate the attacks are from a new ransomware which it's calling "NotPetya". In Germany, postal and logistics company Deutsche Post said systems of its Express division in the Ukraine have, in part, been disrupted.

Last month the UK's National Health Service was attacked by ransomware which locked hospital computers.

As of right now, it is unclear who is behind this attack.

Russian Federation and Ukraine were most affected by the thousands of attacks.

Across the world, the cyber attack has taken out servers and PCs, hitting Eastern Europe worst. On Tuesday, hackers are said to have hijacked about two thousand computers so far in about a dozen countries, freezing systems until a 300 US -dollar Bitcoin ransom is paid.
