Utah: Brian Head wildfire forces evacuations

"Things change day-to-day", Wilder said.

Authorities said Monday they're ordering more evacuations at the fire that has torched more than 67 square miles (174 square kilometers) and cost more than $7 million to fight.

The Brian Head Fire is now the largest wildfire burning in the U.S.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the blaze has grown to 1,200 acres and there's zero containment.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said in statement Wednesday that the fire is the state's top priority. Due to the incident in California, Highway 14 was forced to close down by the police authorities.

"A significant area of thin density smoke attributed to a number of wildfires over the Western and Southwestern United States could be seen this morning stretching from Wyoming southward over a good portion of Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico".

The blaze, dubbed the Placerita Fire, swelled to roughly 800 acres but firefighters had managed to contains about half the blaze by 6 p.m.(0100 GMT), the Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted. The fire's 10 percent contained and has destroyed more than a dozen cabins and other structures.

An image posted by fire officials on Twitter showed two massive plumes of smoke swirling toward the sky over a blackened hilly landscape in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

And in Arizona, firefighters had to ground aircraft used in fighting the Frye Fire because of drones being flown in the vicinity of the blaze, said Bureau of Land Management spokesman Dennis Godfrey.

Meantime, crews reported having established a perimeter around the Stream Fire, which had burned 8,146 acres of high desert grasslands along the Utah-Idaho border, southwest of Snowville.

In related news, a wildfire in California's central coast has surged out of control.

Brian Head fire burns and then moves on to burn some more.

Several small communities have been warned to be ready to evacuate.

The Brian Head fire in southern Utah has burned 13 homes and prompted the evacuation of 1,500.

The blaze that started June 17 is only 10 percent contained, and fire officials continue to battle hostile conditions that include low humidity and hot temperatures.

The Utah fire is the largest in the nation at 78 square miles (201 square kilometers).

The fire has reached into remote areas of Dixie National Forest, where heavy fuel is continuing to feed it. Briggs said when it emerges from there, firefighters hope to get a better handle on it as it moves into lighter sagebrush.
