It's the second major global ransomware attack after WannaCry in the last two months.

Multinational companies, including the global law firm DLA Piper and Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk were also affected, although the firms didn't specify the extent of the damage. They say that the cyber attack on the country is not a coincidence because June 28 is Ukraine's Constitution Day.

"We can confirm that Maersk IT systems are down across multiple sites and business units".

The U.S. -based pharmaceutical company Merck also said it was hit. "They have told us assessing the situation and trying to find a solution as soon as they can", Bansal told ET.

GovTech has in place a range of measures to minimise the likelihood of government systems being infected by malware, including ransomware.

The source of the attack is not yet clear. The difference between Petya and WannaCry is that Petya apparently does not have a kill-switch that could be accidentally triggered. Both asked victims to pay Bitcoin to get their files back, and both use a similar flaw to spread through networks.

Who is behind the Petya ransomware attack and how much has it affected?

Security vendors including Bitdefender and Kaspersky said the NSA exploit, known as EternalBlue, is allowing malware to spread rapidly by itself across internal computer networks at companies and other large organizations.

Major firms, airports and government departments in Ukraine have been struck by a massive cyber attack which began to spread across Europe on Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, according to the country's media, dozens of big banks, particularly Oschadbank and Privatbank, have limited customer service operations.

The malware then reboots the infected system and once it is done, it shows displays a fake message and secretly encrypts the whole system. Ukranian officials confirmed the MeDoc link.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Pavlo Rozenko on Tuesday posted a picture of a darkened computer screen to Twitter, saying that the computer system at the government's headquarters has been shut down. The £3billion aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, which set sail on Monday, has a computer in its control room running on Windows XP - the system hit by a cyber attack in May.
