Murray ready to kick off his Wimbledon defence

Murray is set to begin his campaign for a third title at the All England against lucky loser Alexander Bublik - the world number 134 from Russian Federation - on the first day of the tournament on Centre Court on Monday.

The world number one opens his defense against Alexander Bublik, a lucky loser ranked 134, on Centre Court in front of his home fans on Monday.

He said: "Ever since I was a kid, watching it with my mum, I used to say "well, I would love to be there one day as a player", but never quite made it, so I went through all my twenties and thirties thinking "you know, one year". "I felt comfortable under foot [after the rain], the first few days it's a bit lush and can be slippy but I didn't feel I was losing my footing at all".

"It's a little bit like at the French Open, where maybe I didn't come in as well-prepared, I still found a way with each match to feel a bit better, and built confidence each day".

The injury forced Murray to pull out of two exhibition matches at Hurlingham, severely hampering his preparations for the third Grand Slam of the season.

"So that was why I needed to take the break, to try and give it a chance to settle down, calm down a bit. I am hoping that is the case here", added Murray. I hadn't been able to do as much as I would have liked in the build-up, didn't know the guy I was playing. "Who wins the tournament at the end is what's important, not whose the favourite at the start". "I felt good. I'm definitely looking forward to playing my first round".

In women's singles, five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams battled into the second round after registering a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win over Elise Mertens.

"When I'm out on the court, you're in your own little bubble".

Tim Henman backed Murray to make a strong opening statement, and show the hip problem is not troubling him.

Murray subsequently finished off the match swiftly, leaving the world No 135 on a final tally of 12 double faults. "It's interesting to see the highlights, how they're finishing the ball, but when they're rallying for like 45 shots, you're sitting and you think 'okay, can I quit tennis please?'"

"I don't see that kind of character often: I was chatting to him in the rain delay, talking about the match, and the court".

"I want to make sure I make the most of all of these chances that I have left, including this year". I'm taking it a day at a time. "It's not something new to me", he said.

She will follow Murray onto Centre Court when she takes on Sweden's Johanna Larsson, with Swiss fifth seed Stan Wawrinka then up against Russia's Daniil Medvedev. Federer enters with 84 match wins, equal with Connors for the most.
