Xiaomi, Nokia ink business cooperation, patent agreements

In recent times, numerous reports were claiming that Xiaomi will use Nokia's patents to enter the USA market, but there's no info on this.

A year after buying 1,500 patents from Microsoft, Xiaomi is digging into the global intellectual property pool once again.

Finnish brand Nokia and Chinese brand Xiaomi reportedly entered into an agreement, where the former will use the latter's in-house Surge S1 chipset to power its upcoming mid-range smartphone since the SoC is a mid-range one.

Nokia will provide network infrastructure equipment for the projects, and both firms will also collaborate on research in areas including the Internet of Things (IoT), augmented and virtual reality, and artificial intelligence.

The companies didn't provide financial details of the agreement.

"Xiaomi is committed to building sustainable, long-term partnerships with global technology leaders.

Our collaboration with Nokia will enable us to tap on its leadership in building large, high performance networks and formidable strength in software and services, as we seek to create even more remarkable products and services that deliver the best user experience to our Mi fans worldwide".

According to him, an insider revealed that Nokia will use Xiaomi's Surge S1 processor in its new phone.

Nokia built up its catalog of patents in the days when the company dominated the mobile handset business. It will also work with Xiaomi on technologies related to Nokia's new FP4 network processor. However, speculations claim that both the companies have established a partnership to work together in the future.

This new business agreement will benefit Xiaomi with its IoT ecosystem platform that now has over 60 million connected devices and with 8 million daily active, connected devices on the Mi Ecosystem platform.

Numerous announcements are being made at Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017.
