John McCain: GOP health care bill likely 'dead'

Congress is still trying to send President Donald Trump his first unqualified legislative triumph, almost six months after Republicans grabbed full control of Washington.

White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said on Fox News on Sunday that Trump expected Congress to pass a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare before lawmakers leave Washington for their August recess. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told CBS's "Face The Nation" on Sunday.

Yet that suggestion comes from President Donald Trump, an idea he hatched at 3:37 a.m. a week ago Friday.

The problem is that a straight repeal bill would nearly certainly fail to pass, because many other Republicans want to have in place an alternative method for people to get coverage at the same time.

"I can not imagine that Congress would dare leave Washington without a attractive new Healthcare bill fully approved and ready to go!" he tweeted. "Legislation of this complexity nearly always takes longer than anybody else would hope", McConnell, Ky., said at a June 27 news conference announcing the delay.

Cornyn's comments come as Senate GOP leadership scrambles to figure out a way forward on its bill to repeal and replace ObamaCare. Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah likely needed to get conservatives on board. The nonpartisan budget scorekeeper was also reportedly asked to score a proposal floated by Sen. Childless adults, no surprise, spurn surreal Affordable Care Act plans that must include pediatric dental coverage for kids who do not exist.

Cruz said he continues to believe Republicans can pass health care reform. "Young people get hammered by Obamacare". Don't double her premiums to cross-subsidize other people. "I think most of my colleagues didn't, so we didn't expect to be in this situation", Sen.

"There's a real feeling that that's subterfuge to get around preexisting conditions", Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told Politico Wednesday. I see no reason we should give any taxpayer money to insurance companies.

On ABC's "This Week," Cruz said that colleagues such as Grassley were simply being misled.

She also said she wants to work with Democrats - but is receiving unclear messages from Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Imagine what is going to happen when hard-working employees find out that this new bill has eliminated the Employer Mandate in the ACA to provide them with health insurance. Rob Portman (R-OH) who have singled out opioid addiction funding as their main concern. Why should this matter to most of us?

The by-invitation, town hall-style event was held one day after the senator's appearance in McAllen was disrupted by protesters concerned about health care as well as immigration.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders says he'll file a public option bill when the Republican bill is dead. "This legislation is fatally flawed, and no small tweak here or there will undo the massive damage that it will cause to West Virginia and the entire country". And there's still a shot of getting to 50 [votes].

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week that if his party is unable to pass repeal legislation, then Republicans would have to join Democrats in revamping Obamacare to shore up faltering insurance coverage in some states, a bipartisan effort they so far have been unwilling to undertake.

"If we can not bring the conference together and agree on repeal legislation, then I think President Trump's absolutely right that we should pass a clean repeal", Cruz told reporters. So we are all paying more, but it appears it could have been worse. Yet conservatives, not ruling out the bill's passage, spent the weekend talking up another backup plan.

It's unclear whether the addition would be enough to get the bill passed, as many Republican members have expressed misgivings about how Cruz's amendment would impact protections for people with preexisting conditions.

When the roads, bridges, railroads and airports receive the upgrades and repairs that have been promised for decades by both parties, then, and only then, cam we begin to consider the Republican Senate's promise to replace the current health care with something better.
