IN sees 2 cases of new rare tick virus

Kara Titus, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, said research is ongoing into the signs and symptoms of Bourbon virus, as well as another newly discovered tick-borne illness called Heartland virus.

Anyone who thinks they or a family member may have the Powassan virus is urged to consult with a healthcare provider.

There is no treatment for the viral illness. People over 50 and those with chronic medical conditions who catch a tick-borne disease have a higher risk of developing severe illness.

Wilson's daughter, Amie May, said her mother had acquired secondary infections, including pneumonia. People who have had the disease had symptoms including fever, tiredness, rash, headache, other body aches, nausea, and vomiting.

Wilson's family said she donated her body to science, hopeful it would help doctors fight the Bourbon Virus. Officials said they are not allowed to give any patient specific information such as the age or the identity of the person who died. "This will prevent not only Heartland virus, but also other tick-borne diseases".

Lawrence said the virus doesn't constitute a public health threat.

DHSS staff, including local public health authorities, and the CDC are now collecting ticks in Missouri for Bourbon virus testing.

Ticks can also spread less common but risky infections like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Heartland virus and Powassan virus. Ehrlichiosis is up slightly, with 149 reported cases.

In 2016, IN reported more than 200 cases of tick-borne illness. The diseases are treatable with antibiotics if caught early. At least two people have died, according to federal health officials.

Tim Maxvill of Any Lab Test Now in Chesterfield said that so far, he has seen a few patients come into his clinic concerned about whether they've been bitten. An infection can occur if the tick is attached on the skin for 24 hours or longer. While there was virtually no chance of catching the virus in the US, thousands of Americans died from common influenza that winter. "That's what's scary about this one - you don't know if you're gonna make it or not".

A day later, things took a turn for the worse.

"You'll want to get rid of a tick by dunking it in alcohol or flushing it down the toilet or wrapping it up in tape", Stevens said.
