AI start-up Halli Labs becomes Google's first acquisition in India

Vice President, Product Management of Google, Caesar Sengupta welcomed Pankaj and his team at Halli Labs to Google and looked forward to building some "cool stuff together". The startup was founded by Pankaj Gupta, who is a data scientist with experiences in previous startups in San Francisco. "They'll be joining our team that is focused on building products that are designed for the next billion users coming online, particularly in India", said a Google spokesperson in an emailed statement.

While visiting the website of Halli labs you will get a line that "We are excited to share that the Halli Labs team is joining Google!".

Halli Labs becomes the latest AI start up to be acquired by a technology giant after a mass of similar acquisitions by firms such as Microsoft, Facebook, Apple among others. Gupta founded Halli Labs in April this year.

Naturally entrepreneurs and technologists like us cannot be more excited.

Some of the things Halli Labs has been working on includes "speed recognition" and natural language processing.

According to a blog, Medium.com Halli Labs applies contemporary Machine Learning techniques to old domains and problems to help technology keep moving timelessly - "giving superhuman powers to all of us humans in letting us do whatever we want to do, better", is what the post read. Add to this the fact that this is Google's first acquisition in India and we see that Google is also looking to expand its footprint in this country.

As the noted by the startup, the word "Halli" refers to a village in Kannada.

Google, which is targeting its next billion users, has over the past one year announced several services to better serve the under-exploited Indian market.
