Mac and cheese contains harmful chemicals

The substances, called phthalates - thought to affect hormones and metabolism - were banned from children's teething rings and rubber duck toys a decade ago.

Phthalates, a type of chemical linked to birth defects and brain development problems in children, have been found in high concentration in 10 out of 10 boxes of macaroni and cheese tested by researchers.

Now, DEHP, that's the most widely banned phthalate around the world, was found in all 10 of the mac and cheese powders tested.

"The phthalate concentrations in powder from mac-and-cheese mixes were four times higher than in block cheese and other natural cheeses like shredded cheese, string cheese, and cottage cheese", Mike Belliveau, executive director of the Environmental Health Strategy Center, tells the Times.

The tried and true box of mac n cheese you feed your kids could be downright unsafe.

Exposure to chemicals in medicines, food packaging and toys increases men's risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, recent research reveals.

While she stressed she did not knowingly eat Kraft products during her pregnancy, she said if she'd known the possibly damaging effects of phthalates, she would have done her best to avoid the chemicals while she was pregnant.

There is strong evidence that phthalates block the production of the hormone testosterone.

Use glass, stainless steel, ceramic or wood to hold and store food instead of plastics, Sathyanarayana suggested, and if you are using sippy cups and baby bottles made from hard polycarbonate plastics, don't put hot liquids in them.

A new study found the chemicals in 29 out of 30 samples of powdered cheese products. The organizers say that in addition to Kraft having the largest market for powdered cheese in the industry, they have also taken action in the past to make their foods safer based on scientific and consumer concerns.

The study was conducted by the Coalition for Safer Food Processing and Packaging which is basically a group of consumers, scientists, doctors, and health activists.

"Parents and their children", Lehner said, "should not have to wait longer to know that their food does not contain toxic chemicals".

Kraft has yet to respond to comment.

The FDA is aware of phthalates in our food and considers them to be "indirect food additives". They are industrial chemicals used to soften plastics and are used as solvents, in adhesives and in ink on packaging.

Recently, the European Union banned most phthalates for plastics in contact with fatty foods, including every dairy product.
