Supreme Court accepts Anurag Thakur's fresh apology in contempt case

The Supreme Court accepts the unconditional apology of former BCCI president Anurag Thakur and drops all contempt and criminal proceedings against him. The court has asked how the duo can they be representatives of any cricket body if they are disqualified to be office bearers.

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to former BCCI president N Srinivasan and Niranjan Shah, of the Saurashtra Cricket Association, for participating in the June 26 Special General Meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The bench said it will decide the matter on the next date of the hearing and sought replies from Srinivasan and Shah on the objections raised by CoA in their report.

"During the intervening period of three months since CoA filed third status report, every effort has been made by the CoA to build consensus among constituent members of BCCI for adoption of new BCCI constitution".

N Srinivasan is nominated from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. "Such disqualified persons have a vested interest in stalling implementation of the Judgement because, if the Judgment is implemented, such disqualified person will have to relinquish control over their respective State/Member Associations".

The court also accepted the resignations of two members of the court appointed committee-Vikram Limaye and historian Dr. Ramchandra Guha-to oversee implementation of the Lodha reforms by the cricketing body.

"The SGM held on June 26 was manifestly disruptive".

The issue of perjury arose after the court found discrepancies in Thakur's statements on seeking a letter from the International Cricket Council (ICC) stating that implementation of the Lodha panel's recommendations and the apex court's directions amounted to government interference in the board's working and could mean the derecognition of the BCCI. Vinod Rai, who is head of the COA, earlier, told PTI that Limaye will hold his position till July 14, when the Supreme Court reopens, after which he will have to step down for his new assignment at the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The COA also mentioned that state units are trying to find a way to accommodate disqualified people as the SC order only speaks of debarring disqualified office bearers from attending the BCCI meetings.

The bench said "if we look look into the history, we can not deny the contribution made by railways to cricket".
