Al-Bashir to tour Gulf countries over crisis with Qatar

France has called on a Saudi-led quartet of Arab countries to immediately lift sanctions on Qatari nationals as an unprecedented diplomatic rift between the so-called siege states and the Persian Gulf's peninsular country increasingly deepens.

Per Reuters' Mitch Phillips, the six Arab nations-United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Egypt, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Mauritania-that severed relations with Qatar last month want Qatar removed as host of the World Cup, deeming it a "base of terrorism".

"France calls for the lifting, as soon as possible, of the measures that affect the populations in particular, bi-national families that have been separated or students", Reuters reported French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said.

To further pressure Qatar, Saudi Arabia has totally closed its land border with its tiny neighbor, through which much of Qatar's food supply crossed. The countries say a pact the Gulf nation signed with the USA last week to disable the flow of money to terrorist groups isn't enough to end the rift, and insisted their demands that Qatar change its policies be met in full.

Gulf states' demands which include the closure of a Turkish military base in Qatar are "unacceptable", Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said yesterday.

"We hope to resolve this crisis within the Gulf house, and we hope that wisdom prevails for our brothers in Qatar in order to respond to the demands of the global community - not just of the four countries", he said. In return, the four feuding countries vowed to impose further sanctions on Doha.

Le Drian was speaking alongside Sheikh Mohammed, hours after his arrival in Doha.

Le Drian said that France was very concerned about the ongoing Gulf crisis since it has started to impact the lives of so many people. Le Drian said that France would be part of the Kuwait-led mediation to help resolve the crisis.

"We hope to cooperate with Saudi Arabia in implementing Saudi Vision", he added, after talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir.
