Can Jordan Morris and the USMNT get past Nicaragua?

The USMNT played Nicaragua for the first time on Saturday in Cleveland, needing goals to win group B at the 2017 Gold Cup.

Nicaragua is the bottom feeder in Group B, losing 2-0 to Martinique and 2-1 to Panama. Bedoya whipped in a cross that found Joe Corona at the top of the penalty box and after dancing around a pair of defenders, the Club Tijuana midfielder fired past goalkeeper Justo Lorente for the game's first goal.

A hand ball in the Nicaragua penalty area five minutes later gave Corona a chance to score his second of the game and give the USA the margin it would need to win the group.

Miazga, a Chelsea defender playing his first worldwide match since May 2016, had an open header near a post and scored his first goal in three national team appearances. They will face the third-place team from Group A or C on Wednesday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Bedoya intercepted a pass deep in Nicaragua's end and tried working a combination with Dwyer. The USMNT had a chance to double the lead from the penalty spot in the 51st but Dom Dwyer saw his attempt saved.

The U.S. finally broke through, scoring in the 37th minute.

Four minutes into the second half Dwyer was yanked down in the penalty area and the referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot.

Kelyn Rowe made it 2-0 when he finished from a nice assist from Alejandro Bedoya in the 56th minute. The USMNT would tack on a third goal in the 88th minute by way of a Matt Miazga header, three minutes after Nicaragua dropped to ten men due to defender Luis Copete receiving his second yellow card of the match. With it looking like the U.S. might end up finishing second in group play to Panama on goal difference, Miazga scored on a header from a free kick in the 88th minute to grab hold of the group and ensure the USMNT finished on top.
