How Much Did Cubs' World Series Odds Improve with Jose Quintana? 7/13/17

"It's an essential step for us to make the most of this window that we have", he told reporters on a conference call. Yes, they're 4.5 behind Milwaukee for the division. Quintana comes with a very controllable deal. Well, of course since they have either been dinged up and underachieving.

Calling the season the Cubs are having a disappointment would be a gross understatement. While his surface numbers - 4.49 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP - don't seem all that appealing, there is plenty to love about his move to the National League. The left-hander is 4-8 with a 4.49 ERA but is striking out a career-high 9.4 per nine. The best news for the Cubs though is that Quintana has a 2.51 career ERA at Wrigley Field. Quintana has been dropped in many standard league already. And there is truth to that. The Royals are in danger of losing a number of their core players to free agency as the contracts end for the likes of Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas following this season. There wasn't much communication between them until Hahn reached out on Sunday. He may have to go back to Arizona and Philadelphia (hitter's park) as well.

The White Sox are in last in the AL Central but have now made a series of trades that leave them with one of the best crop of prospects in baseball. He said the White Sox asked for reigning NL MVP Bryant when he inquired about a deal for All-Star pitcher Chris Sale in the offseason. So the defensive upgrade isn't as strong as what one may believe. White Sox general manager Rick Hahn announced right-hander Zack Burdi, their first-round pick a year ago, has a torn ligament in his elbow and is likely headed for Tommy John surgery.

After the White Sox and Cubs agreed to a blockbuster deal in which the Cubs acquired the secret-ace Jose Quintana for a haul of prospects - including Roy Hobbs-cosplayer Eloy Jimenez - Chicago is set to be more powerful than ever before. That is just sickening. Quintana's arm will give the Cubs a fourth quality starter in the rotation once Kyle Hendricks returns from his injury, and if John Lackey can turn his season around then the rotation will be right back to the level they performed at last season. "At the same time, the guys in the clubhouse can't worry what's going on there and who's talking about what".

The Sox made a decision to start rebuilding last July, and much like the December trades of Chris Sale (Boston) and Adam Eaton (Washington), getting high-end youngsters was the goal.

Jimenez, 20, is the centerpiece of the deal for the White Sox.

You're stunned. I get it. He got beaten up pretty badly to open the year and while he had a few starts to help rectify the ratio-damage done, another few setbacks continued to frustrate his owners.

By trading for Quintana, they brought in an elite starter who is under club control through 2020.

Overall I think this is a win for the White Sox more than the Cubs. Hopefully, I'll have a chance this year.

The Cubs' need for another quality arm in the rotation has been apparent all season after their off-season acquisitions of Brett Anderson and Eddie Butler hadn't panned out as planned (although Butler hasn't been bad like Anderson was).
