Balfour Beatty JV wins High Speed 2 contracts worth 2.5 bln stg

Chris Grayling, the minister for transport, said he hoped Carillion could pull through their current challenges.

The firm's interim chief executive, Keith Cochrane, said: "We are delighted that our joint venture, CEK, has been selected to deliver two of the three Central contracts for HS2 Phase 1, the London to Birmingham section of the route, reflecting the strength of our joint venture".

Mr Grayling will announce today the decision to award £6.6bn worth of construction contracts for the first phase of HS2 between London and Birmingham.

Preparatory works are already underway, with main construction work starting in 2018/19 following a period of detailed design work.

The work is estimated to support 16,000 jobs.

In Area North the stretch between Long Itchington Wood Green Tunnel and Delta Junction, the Birmingham Spur and the Delta Junction to West Coast Main Line was won by BBV, a team made up of Balfour Beatty (UK) and Vinci Grands Projets (France). This is the first phase of the controversial £55.7bn HS2 project, and it includes plans for a 600-mile cycleway network to be built to Dutch standards.

"HS2 offers transformational opportunities for the local, regional and national economy through job creation, better connectivity, shorter journey times, improved onward services to Scotland and freeing up capacity on existing lines, so is it vital it is delivered in full".

"Once completed 30 million people will be served by HS2 across over 25 stations, helping to change the economic geography of the country, and bring prosperity to the midlands, the north, and beyond".

The latest announcements come after business leaders met in Leeds this month and were told Yorkshire must make its voice heard, in order to guarantee the rail line is built in the region.

In November a year ago, ministers said the line should serve the existing central station in Sheffield, after proposals to run trains to the Meadowhall shopping centre were set aside.

"We will now press ahead with building the line, while continuing to ensure affected communities get appropriate support and are treated with fairness, compassion and respect", he concluded.

David Higgins, chairman of HS2 Ltd, added: "Today we have taken a huge step forward in connecting eight of our largest cities, freeing up space on our railways and building a catalyst for growth across the country".

But critics have warned this will mean homes on the new Shimmer housing estate in nearby Mexborough being bulldozed.

A bill will be published shortly covering phase 2a - from the West Midlands to Crewe and which is expected to open the following year - while phase 2b from Crewe on to Manchester begins in 2033.

This comes amid concerns about the HS2 project as a whole, with campaigners from Stop HS2 claiming that costs will double to £111bn.
