First Look at Al Pacino as Joe Paterno in HBO Biopic

First Look at Al Pacino as Joe Paterno in HBO Biopic

But on Sunday, HBO released a photo of Pacino as Paterno that should signal that this production is ready to get underway.

Deadline Hollywood has the first look at Pacino as Paterno and it is eerie.

The HBO movie, directed by Barry Levinson, focuses on Paterno's fall from grace, "challenging his legacy and forcing him to face questions of institutional failure regarding the victims", according to a press release.

Before the scandal, Paterno was regarded as one of the most legendary coaches in college football history as he led them to two national championships over his 45 year career. Pacino won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his role as Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience) will play reporter Sara Ganim, who first brought this story to light for The Patriot News as a 23-year-old. It appears that the film clearly won't concentrate on Paterno's coaching career, but more about the fallout resulting from the revelations of sexual abuse of young boys by Sandusky, his longtime defensive coordinator.

Shortly after being fired as Penn State football coach in 2012, Paterno died due to complications from lung cancer. The film marks the second time Pacino has played a football coach, following his turn as the fictional gridiron genius Tony D'Amato in Oliver Stone's hard-hitting sports drama Any Given Sunday.

It's no different with the late Nittany Lions coach.

Academy Award victor Al Pacino is about to tackle one of his most controversial roles yet, portraying late college football legend Joe Paterno.
