Florida's Venezuelans Came Out In Full Force For Unofficial Vote

Florida's Venezuelans Came Out In Full Force For Unofficial Vote

David Smilde, a Tulane University expert on Venezuela, said Sunday's results would likely rally the global community even more strongly against the July 30 vote Maduro has called to elect members of the assembly that will retool Venezuela's 1999 constitution.

The latest fatality came on Sunday when gunmen shot a 61-year-old woman in a crowd of opposition voters in the poor Caracas neighborhood of Catia.

"Today, Venezuela said yes to a dignified country, a democratic country, a country where people do not have to go because they have no future".

Recently, the Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos, who has worked closely with the USA state department and Venezuela, asked Cuba's Raul Castro, a close ally of Maduro, to intervene in the conflict.

"Mr. Fox came to Venezuela paid to promote violence and intervention by foreign powers", tweeted a furious Venezuelan Foreign Minister Samuel Moncada after the Mexican had flown out.

The opposition says it is a bid by Maduro to concentrate dictatorial prerogatives and stay on despite his deep unpopularity, put at 80 percent by Datanalisis.

Though polls show the opposition has majority support and his foes repeatedly call for a free and fair election as their top demand, Maduro insists they are US pawns intent on sabotaging the economy and bringing him down through violence. The polling stations were also visited by several heads of other Latin American states who stood in a show of solidarity with the opposition.

The day was marred by violence when pro-government paramilitary groups attacked voters outside the Our Lady of Carmen Church.

More than 100,000 people turned out to vote in South Florida.

Given the option of answering yes or no to three questions, the overwhelming majority of participants - more than 98 percent - rejected the proposal for a Constituent Assembly, called for elections before the end of Maduro's current term in 2019, and said the armed forces should defend the present constitution.

Energized by a massive vote against President Nicolas Maduro in an unofficial plebiscite, Venezuela's opposition mulled on Monday how to escalate protests and block a new congress it fears may enshrine Socialist Party hegemony.

"I signed because there's no medicine, no food, no security", she said.

"One particular thing that makes this act unlawful is that they never consulted with the people if they people want to change the constitution".

"It clearly states that Maduro is as deeply unpopular as he has always been thought to be, and it shows, as the polls have suggested, that Venezuelans are overwhelmingly against the idea of establishing a constitutional assembly", Philip reports.

It's good to remember that the oil-rich nation is facing a humanitarian crisis.

Scott's death brings the total number of people killed since anti-government protests broke out in early April to 95.
