HTC faces backlash over ads on phone keyboard

HTC faces backlash over ads on phone keyboard

HTC has confirmed that ads automatically being presented within the keyboard app on certain smartphones is indeed an error.

In case you didn't know, TouchPal is the name of the company that provides the keyboard app pre-installed on many HTC phones, as well as others from Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, Sony or Alcatel. After all, they are the ones who chose to partner with Touchpal and are guilty of letting the ad update through, whether by commission or omission. This has infuriated a number of users and they have taken to social media to outrage against this. But in its HTC-specific iteration, it has plummeted to under 3 stars after a mystery server error caused the recent invasion of unwanted ads on high-end devices, mainly the 10. Judging by HTC's response to the whole matter, it seems that the ads were added to TouchPal without HTC's approval. It also means that HTC could be in the process of removing the ads for good.

Both companies are to be blamed in this case. Instead, you will see an Uninstall Updates button in its place.

While it's definitely plausible that this was an innocent error, it has already turned into a PR mess due to the delay in HTC's response. The only feasible error we can think of is possible a misunderstanding between HTC's engineers and executives, the latter of which might have determined that it made financial sense to include ads on the free version of TouchPal. That is the differentiating factor that infuriated many HTC device owners and sideline commenters.

Fortunately, it is too easy to install other keyboards on Android, including Google's own Gboard. UPDATE: HTC this evening gave us the following statement.
