One Click and Voilà, Your Entire Data Center is Encrypted

One Click and Voilà, Your Entire Data Center is Encrypted

Customers of the previous z13 mainframe can take advantage of the new pervasive encryption features by upgrading the operating system and software, but they won't get the performance boost that the new IBM Z mainframe provides, Perera said. Of these records, only four percent were encrypted, which means there is plenty of data out there vulnerable to things like cyber attacks, organized crime rings, or employees misusing access to sensitive information, said the company.

"IBM Z's new data encryption capabilities are created to address the global epidemic of data breaches, a major factor in the $8 trillion cyber crime impact on the global economy by 2022", explained IBM.

"The vast majority of stolen or leaked data today is in the open and easy to use because encryption has been very hard and expensive to do at scale", says Ross Mauri, GM for IBM Z.

IBM notes that encryption is often largely absent in corporate and cloud data centers because current solutions for x86-based servers can degrade performance and can be too complex and expensive to manage.

IBM has launched a new mainframe system capable of running more than 12 billion encrypted transactions per day, in a bid to wade further into the financial cybersecurity market.

The new system also claims to introduce a breakthrough encryption engine that makes it possible to encrypt all transactional data associated with any application, cloud service or database, meaning less worry about cyber crooks and card thieves going insane after taking your card details.

Big Blue says the z14 can run Java workloads 50 per cent faster than X86 alternatives.

More than 12-billion encrypted transactions per day on a single system.

IBM Z protects millions of encryption keys with tamper responding hardware that self destructs at any sign of intrusion.

IBM has rolled out what it called the biggest revamp of mainframe technology in more than a decade with a system that aims to stem the damage caused by data breaches through pervasive encryption.

It hopes the new mainframe will enable companies to comply with new data protection laws, such as the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the U.S.'s Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) guidance on the use of encryption in the financial services industry. They will face fines of up to 4pc of annual worldwide revenues, or €20m, unless the organisation can demonstrate that data was encrypted and the keys were protected. The mainframe and encryption engine are direct responses the growing number of data breaches, which as become a global epidemic in recent years. It supports 2,000,000 Docker containers and 1,000 concurrent NoSQL databases.

A Secure Service Container protects is claimed to protect against insider threats from contractors and privileged users, providing automatic data and code encryption in-flight and at-rest, and tamper-resistance during installation and runtime. This bulk encryption would not be feasible if not for a ginormous seven-fold increase in cryptographic performance over the previous generation IBM z13, which IBM says is driven by a 4x increase in silicon dedicated to cryptographic algorithms. Rather, it allows for all data associated with any app, cloud service or database to be encrypted at all times, in a streamlined process that doesn't require any software changes. And the Z is faster overall, regardless of the task at hand: there's three times the memory (a hefty 32TB), three times faster input/output and much lower lag when talking to a storage area network. IBM also integrates with IBM Blockchain services, the release said, and IBM has announced new container pricing as part of the IBM Z debut.
