'VIP care' to Sasikala in jail

As Sasikala bribegate takes centre stage in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Sunday demanded a thorough probe on the reports of AIADMK General Secretary and convict VK Sasikala Natarajan getting VIP treatment at the Bengaluru Central Prison in exchange for a bribe of Rs 2 crore. According to sources, these prisoners were believed to be helping Sasikala. "However, DIG Roopa wanted additional responsibilities of the Dharwad, Kalaburgi, Ballari and Belagavi prisons", DGP Satyanarayana Rao said.

Siddaramaiah said she could have approached any of her superiors about her charges against senior officials and that her allegations before the mainstream and social media has brought embarrassment to the police department.

Ms.Roopa had exposed several lapses in the prison's administration, which were, however, denied by Rao and the jail officials.

The murky deals in the jail, which was on the rounds for a longtime, came to light and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had ordered ahigh level probe former IAS official. Based on the findings of the report, further course of action will be decided. She says that she is willing to co-operate with the probe all the way, but insists that it be thorough and fair.

"I had sent her a memo when she invited the media at the time as well". There is also a talk that Rs 2 crore has been paid as bribe for this. "I have served a memo to her (Roopa) seeking explanation and evidence to prove her wild allegations". No special treatment is being given to Sasikala, she told reporters on Thursday.

This room was set up next to the office of the Chief Superintendent of the Prisons. It may be recalled here that Roopa had alleged that her visit to Sasikala's cell was allegedly missing from the CCTV footage.

PTI reports another top official has also been tranferred.

"D. Roopa, IPS (Karnataka 2000 batch), Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police, is transferred with immediate effect and posted until further orders as Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety in place of A.S.N. Murthy, IPS, transferred", said the order issued by the state Department of Personnel here.
