Voting in presidential election ends

Every elected legislator will exercise his/her franchise to choose the country's President. "Whether to vote for him or not will be decided by my party and I will stand by my party decision and can not promise my support to NDA's Presidential candidate until party high command makes a final decision". That translates to 5,49,452 votes.

Meria Kumar has the support of only 17 opposition parties, but Ramnath Kovind has 70 percent supporters.

The NDA has about 50 per cent of vote share but is comfortably placed to get its nominee elected. However, AAP plans to abstain as its leader H.S. Phoolka, who has handled several 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases which some Congress leaders are implicated in, has said he can not vote for the Congress candidate.

Sonia Gandhi, the head of the Congress party, appealed to members of parliament to vote for Kumar to protect India's secular values.

Another Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Kovind will register a "decisive victory" and would turn out as an "honest" president, who, he said, will work hard according to the Constitution. Members of Legislative Council (MLCs) will not participate in Presidential Election 2017.

The contest which is largely being viewed as a clash between two Dalit leaders, was described by Kumar as an "ideological battle". Paper ballots will be used and the votes will be valid only if a special violet ink pen is used to vote. "All parties must train their MPs and MLAs to cast their votes so that not a single vote is wasted", he added. The voting has been taking place in Room no 62 in Parliament. However, in presidential polls, parties can not issue a whip and cross-voting is often seen. There will be six tables. "I am confident Kovind after becoming the president will take nation to new heights of development", said Raje, adding that BJP declared him as its candidature due to his achievements in public life.
