Why OJ Simpson is expected to be paroled this week

Why OJ Simpson is expected to be paroled this week

The Nevada Board of Parole will determine next week whether O.J. Simpson will be a free man after almost a decade in prison, or if he'll continue to serve out more of his sentence following a bungled robbery in Las Vegas.

The 2007 crime, during which Simpson and others stole some 800 items from a Las Vegas hotel room, came a little over a decade after he was acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. The parole hearing on Thursday covers Simpson's other counts.

The 70-year-old former National Football League player was sentenced to a minimum of nine years and a maximum of 33 years in prison, for kidnapping and burglary in 2008. He was found guilty by a jury on all 12 charges.

Simpson will have an opportunity to speak during the upcoming hearing, according to David Smith, a spokesman for the parole board.

But given the notoriety of the Simpson trial and O.J. Simpson, a black man who went unpunished for killing a white woman, can the decision be "non personal"?

He was granted parole in 2013 on the armed robbery convictions. On Thursday, the board will consider parole on the other charges, including kidnapping, robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon.

Some believed that the long sentence he received for the Las Vegas robbery was retribution for his previous acquittal, although this was denied by the judge.

"It's a fairly routine administrative matter, " the attorney said.

The parole board has said it will issue a decision Thursday so to minimize the media circus that will surely follow its decree. The results of some hearings, by contrast, take three weeks to reach the inmate. In either case, a decision is expected on the day of the hearing.

If the four commissioners at the hearing are not in agreement, two additional commissioners will participate from Las Vegas by phone or video conference. If the board votes against him, Simpson could stay in prison until 2022.

He told Page Six, "The Juice is sweating it over the parole hearing".

If they grant parole, he could be released October 1.

"In terms of what he does with the rest of his life, " Galanter said, "if he was sitting next to me I'd say, 'Listen, be thankful you got out in nine years".
