Winnie the Pooh was censored in China

Winnie the Pooh was censored in China

"Winnie the Pooh"- the favourite cartoon show among child was a part of several GIFs and memes on social networking site which drew parallels between the little beer and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Another Pooh-Xi comparison became China's most censored image of 2015 according to political consultancy Global Risk Insights.

It appears that Xi Jinping has failed to see the humor in these comparisons.

This time around, event attempts to search for Winnie's name in Chinese characters on Weibo generate a message stating "content is illegal".

In 2014 another photo of Jinping was shared showing him shaking hands with Japanese minister Shinzo Abe and was compared to a picture of the bear shaking hands with Eeyore. Widely shared comparisons between Xi and Winnie the Pooh first circulated in 2013 during Xi's visit with then US president Barack Obama.

Yet, the newspaper believes that the move has demonstrated tightening censorship on the eve of the autumn congress of the Communist Party of China, where important changes inside the Chinese leadership are likely to happen.

The popular Instant Messaging service WeChat, widely used in China, has suppressed Winnie's image from his emoticons gallery, but users can still distribute their own animated images of this famous character created in the United Kingdom in the 1920's.

Later, a photo of Xi poking through the roof of a parade vehicle next to a picture of Winnie the Pooh in a toy auto, was named the "most censored image of 2015" by political consultancy Global Risk Insights. "What the heck, give Pooh and President Xi a break!"

On Monday many Chinese social media users were testing the boundaries of the restrictions imposed on the bear who groans "oh, bother" when things don't go his way.

Honey-loving resident of the Hundred Acre Wood, Winnie the Pooh, has apparently run afoul of Chinese censors yet again.
