Israel insists on keeping metal detectors at Al Aqsa mosque

A Palestinian man died at a hospital Saturday evening after he was injured in clashes with Israeli forces earlier, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

"This conflict has been going on for a long time. A lot of Palestinians feel they are defending Al Aqsa on behalf of all Muslims".

"If they (Palestinians) do not want to enter the mosque, then let them not enter the mosque". But the Israeli government ignored their advice.

Most of the injuries were caused by rubber bullets, it added.

In the crowded alleyways of the Old City's Muslim Quarter, hundreds of the more than 3,000 Israeli police were deployed to keep order.

"They don't have a right to place the [metal detectors] at the gates to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, because sovereignty over the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque is our right..." They also forced Palestinian shopkeepers to close their businesses, for the first time since 1969.

According to a spokesman for the Cairo-based Arab League, Abul Gheit accused Israel of involving religion in its decades-old dispute with Palestinians. It denied accusations it was trying to take over the site.

Despite worldwide pressure to remove the metal detectors, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security Cabinet decided in Friday's early hours to keep them in place, saying they were needed to prevent arms being smuggled into the shrine. Furthermore, the issue of Jewish settlements, despite the fact that both the USA and the European Union have warned Israel that the move is both illegal and a violation of Palestinians' housing rights, the warnings have fallen on the deaf ears of the Israeli government. As an occupying power, Israel is forbidden from doing so under worldwide law. "Everything Israel is doing in East Jerusalem is a clear violation of global law", said Khalil Shaheen, a Ramallah-based political analyst at the Masarat think-tank.

United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has condemned the violence in Jerusalem on Friday, which resulted in the deaths of three young Palestinian protesters.

He called East Jerusalem their "eternal capital", and said will "continue to protect it and work for its liberation from the occupation".

Tensions in Jerusalem's Old City boiled over into skirmishes after the midday prayer. Palestinian riots had erupted over the new security measures.

"In those two days, Israel had full control over al-Haram al-Sharif; it had the keys to the mosque, and now it is taking control over the entry of Palestinians into the site. In outcome, it is safe to conclude that placing these electronic detectors on the entrance of al-Haram al-Sharif entrances is unlawful", Jalajel said.

After a terrorist murdered three family members in their home, preceded by the death of three Arabs who rioted against heightened security in Jerusalem, Guterres "call [ed] on all to refrain from any actions or words that could further escalate an already volatile situation". Abbas, like Netanyahu, fears the anger on the Palestinian street could ignite into another armed uprising.
