One Jordanian killed, one Israeli wounded at Israeli embassy in Jordan

Another Jordanian was hurt along with an Israeli man who is in a serious condition following the incident in the Rabiyeh neighbourhood of Jordan's capital.

One man was killed and another two were wounded by gunfire Sunday in a residential building in the heavily fortified Israeli embassy compound in Jordan's capital, the kingdom's Public Security Directorate said.

The quarrel broke out between the two for unknown reasons, leaving the Jordanian with two gunshots in the shoulder and the Israeli stabbed in the chest.

It said two Jordanian men working for a furniture firm had entered the embassy before the shooting.

Israel's foreign ministry had no immediate comment.

Israel and Jordan are bound by a 1994 peace treaty, but tensions have been high in recent days after Israel installed metal detectors at the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in east Jerusalem.

A crowd estimated at more than 8,000 turned out for a demonstration called by Islamist movements and leftist parties. They or their parents or grandparents were expelled or fled to Jordan in the fighting that accompanied the creation of Israel in 1948.

The two wounded people were taken to hospital, it said.

The country's officials have said they are open to adopting alternative security measures in order to reduce tensions, but have warned they will not remove the metal detectors.

The same day, thousands of Palestinians clashed with Israeli security forces in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
