Tom Daley: Chinese celebrations turned me into 'competitive animal'

Tom Daley: Chinese celebrations turned me into 'competitive animal'

Tom Daley's eight-year wait to reclaim his individual world diving title is over after winning the 10m platform, ending the World Aquatics Championships in extraordinary style in Budapest.

Asked if he had always felt that way about the Chinese cheering, Daley said: "Normally, I wouldn't be after the Chinese divers". Chen's teammate Yang Jian took the third place in 565.15 points.

Daley did not even reach the Olympic final in Rio de Janeiro past year, but his haul today was better than the 585.30 scored by Chen when winning in the Brazilian city.

Daley was one of the platform favorites at the Rio Olympics and led after the preliminaries.

He also competed with Grace Reid in the mixed 3m springboard to win silver.

Chen threw down a towel in disgust when he realized Daley had pulled out the victory.

"I performed well and I'm satisfied with my score", said the 21-year-old Chen. "And I was like "okay, you want to play that game?"

But the Brits continued to impress and scored 72.54 for their final dive to secure their silver medal, finishing on a total of 308.04 behind China on 323.70, with Canada claiming the bronze.

With husband Dustin Lance Black, the Hollywood screenwriter, alongside his mum Debbie in the Duna Arena, Daley this time delivered when the pressure was on to add to the world title he first won in 2009, aged 15.

Synchronized swimming also drew the curtain after holding the last two finals on Saturday.

But Russia took the gold in the final synchro competition - its seventh in nine events at worlds - when Aleksandr Maltsev and Mikhaela Kalancha won the mixed duet free routine, a relatively new, non-Olympic event.

The sport known for its hair gel, glittering uniforms and over-the-top pageantry will have a new moniker going forward.

It came on the same day that FINA approved a name change from synchronised to artistic swimming due to come into operation after the Championships.
