Turbine Installation Begins for the World's First Floating Wind Farm

The innovative wind project is located 15 miles off Peterhead, Aberdeenshire and will be comprised of five turbines manufactured by Statoil.

Norwegian oil and gas giant Statoil has produced the turbines and hope that the floating foundations will enable turbines to be installed in many viable sites that are now too deep for monopiles.

The towers that will carry the rotors were built in Spain and assembled at Stord in Norway, each weighing approximately 12,000 tonnes and measuring 253m high from the lowest point on the sub-structure to the tip of the blade, said Statoil. The construction costs for wind farms also pale in comparison to Hinckley Point, the UK's planned nuclear project, which EDF believes could cost almost £20bn.

So far, one giant turbine has already been moved into place, while four are now ready to move in from a Norwegian fjord.

Statoil spent six years testing its technology before sanctioning the Hywind project and other developers are also working to deploy the technology. "It's a game-changer for floating wind power and we are sure it will help bring costs down", project director Leif Delp said according to BBC.

This pilot project shows the huge potential Scotland has to generate clean energy and create new jobs to replace those being lost in the declining oil and gas industry.

A Hywind turbine uses a 78-meter-tall underwater ballast and three mooring lines attached to the seabed to keep it upright.

The U.K.is reported to be the world's largest offshore wind market at 36% installed wind capacity, followed by Germany at 29%, and then China at 11%. Statoil officials believe floating wind farms will eventually be built without government assistance, however, after the technology becomes more widespread and increased production brings costs down.

Is the development of the floating wind farm a viable solution to the growing need of humankind for more stable sources of energy?
