Spotify elbows into Apple's turf with new podcast initiative

Spotify is expected to go public some time later this year, and it looks like the music streaming service has reached a new milestone.

The move is to created to both encourage more users to pay for their Spotify subscriptions, thus generating more money for artist and label, and provide a more enticing offer to any artists out there who want to keep their music away from the service.

Spotify continues to grow at a solid pace, adding some 20 million subscribers in under a year.

Spotify - started in 2008 and available in 60 countries - gave the figure in its first update since March, when it had announced that it had 50 million subscribers.

Last week Reuters reported that Spotify was close to agreeing a new licensing pact with Warner Music Inc, the last big music royalty deal it needs before pushing ahead with a USA stock market listing, four sources familiar with the situation said. Apple announced back in June that it had 27 million paying subscribers.

Streaming of unlimited, on-demand music online has rapidly grown in recent years, transforming the music industry.

Securing licensing deals with all three of these labels is crucial for Spotify as it further secures its intentions to go public.

Spotify is also supposedly set to have passed the 100 million free users mark as well in the last few months. In return, the hosts will reportedly shout out Spotify on their shows and on social media. It also has more than 2 billion popular playlists.

According to a report from Bloomberg, it seems that Spotify is apparently working on a new podcast initiative.
