Officials hope to have power restored Monday

Officials hope to have power restored Monday

As of August 1, power to Hatteras and Ocracoke is expected to return in an estimated four to six days. All seven villages on Hatteras have been removed from generator power and are now receiving power from the cooperative's transmission lines.

No additional information about access to Ocracoke Island has been provided. During the construction of the new Bonner Bridge that stretches almost three miles across Oregon Inlet from Bodie Island to Hatteras Island, power lines were cut after a steel casing was driven into an underground transmission cable. It wasn't immediately clear when visitors would be allowed back on Ocracoke Island, which is in a neighboring county to the south.

Having to rely on temporary power, county officials asked residents to minimize their electric use so the generators could handle the load.

The weeklong outage on the two islands was caused by an accident during construction of a bridge between islands.

Officials say they now hope to restore power fully to North Carolina's Outer Banks by Monday.

This comes after PCL Construction, the contractors building the new Bonner Bridge, "drove a piling through the underground cable between the southern end of Bonner Bridge and the first riser pole on Hatteras Island", according to Tideland Electric Membership Cooperation. The new line is near Oregon Inlet and the cable has been energized.

Vacationers turned away by an island power outage in North Carolina say they've gotten few answers about whether they'll get back money they spent on canceled or interrupted trips.

The mandatory evacuation order for visitors to Ocracoke Island had not been lifted yet as of about 5 p.m. Thursday.

Scores of vacationers like Tianna Lee are now navigating the sometimes confusing process of trying to get repaid for lost travel expenses.
