Dutch beat Denmark to win Euro title

A brace from Vivianne Miedema led hosts Netherlands to a 4-2 win over Denmark and their first women's Euro title in Enschede on Sunday.

Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman said she hoped the victory and success of the tournament on home soil would promote the game among Dutch girls and prove a platform on which to build greater success for the women's team as it prepares to start qualification for the World Cup later this year. "Actually Denmark changed it and we continued today".

But putting the hosts ahead was Barcelona bombshell Lieke Martens - the gorgeous midfielder crowned player of the tournament who has already won an army of fans on Instagram with over 80,000 followers.

Nadia Nadim, Vivianne Miedema, Lieke Martens and Pernille Mosegaard-Harder all scored inside a insane opening 33 minutes.

"We've played six wonderful games and today we showed that even if we get behind in the game we can still change the game", said Miedema, pointing out the champions' ideal record at the tournament.

Five minutes later, Denmark were back on terms at 2-2 when captain Pernille Harder overcame the Dutch offside trap and then beat Sari van Veenendaal at her near post with a well-placed shot. "A match with six goals, that's very important for women's football as well".

The Dutch would not be denied however, and Sherida Spitse scored a free kick early in the second half before Miedema put the result beyond doubt with a brilliant run and finish in the 89th minute.

Harder's equalizer was well-deserved, but Denmark ran out of steam and could not cope with the home side's seemingly limitless pace and power as they notched two second-half goals to secure the trophy.

This was a historic victory, the first global championship in team history.
