Chandigarh stalking accused sent to judicial custody till August 25

In another damning evidence in the Chandigarh stalking case, a CCTV footage has been recovered of August 4th which clearly shows accused Vikas Barala purchasing alcohol before chasing down Varnika Kunda at midnight.

When produced in the court, prime accused, Vikas Barala - son of Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Subhash Barala -denied all the charges leveled against following the interrogation at Sector 26 police station on Wednesday. The court allowed the application and the two will now be produced in court on August 24.

There was a massive outrage on streets and in the Parliament regarding the incident. The defense counsel said that the accused were not guilty since no offence has been committed.

Sources say that the police pressed for custody as they will require both the accused to conduct further investigation in relation to the complaint made by the victim. They were sent to jail as Chandigarh Police did not seek their police remand. They were, however, granted bail the same day.

August 10 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday urged the Opposition not to politicise the Chandigarh stalking case and asserted that the law will take its course in the case.

A notice was issued to both the accused under 160 Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the case has been filed under Section 354D (stalking), 341 (wrongful restraint), 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 185 MV Act (driving by a drunken person or by a person under the influence of drugs). The police had arrested the duo, after charges of attempt to kidnap were slapped against them. He further stated that, Varnika "is like my daughter" and assured action against his son.
