DEADPOOL Director Boards NEUROMANCER Adaptation

DEADPOOL Director Boards NEUROMANCER Adaptation

After spending most of his career as a special effects guru, Miller now has a one-hit-wonder with his directorial debut, 2016's R-rated, record breaking Deadpool.

This project doesn't now have a screenwriter or a release date, so it's unclear where it would fall in Miller's schedule.

First, Miller was tied to the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action/cartoon-hybrid project. The genre - used to describe near-future, dystopian sci-fi and exemplified by the likes of Blade Runner, Total Recall, The Matrix - is widely regarded to have been influenced heavily by the work of author William Gibson, and in particular his breakout novel Neuromancer.

T.J. Miller - who plays Deadpool's best friend Weasel - recently revealed the second film won't follow the "same [story] in a different location" and will instead involve "different stakes".

Neuromancer fits this bill perfectly.

The Hollywood Reporter has the news, and while the project doesn't have a writer or any stars attached at the moment, the report mentions that writer/producer Simon Kinberg (who is making his directorial debut with X-Men: Dark Phoenix) will produce this adaptation. But he's given a shot at getting back in the saddle when he is hired to complete the ultimate hack: one on an artificial intelligence orbiting Earth'. From there, things get really odd. Neuromancer is a famously gritty cyberpunk thriller, and Miller's direction with Deadpool shows that he's certainly capable of delivering the sort of stylistic take Gibson's world deserves. After all, Miller has a lot of half-projects on the go at the moment, and with this movie's slow development up to this point, it's possible that this might be just another fizzled attempt.

A film adaptation of Neuromancer has been a long time coming.
