Half of Republicans support postponing 2020 election if Trump asked

Only 34 percent of Americans agree with him, while 62 percent favor moving on, including 47 percent of Republicans, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll released Friday. A poll carried out by SSRS indicates that both Republicans and Democrats in Congress are seen as failures by the majority of Americans.

Approval of the current Republican leaders in Congress has dropped from 39% in January to just 24% now. Seven in 10 Americans disapprove of Republican leaders in the House of Representatives and in the Senate based on their performances so far.

More Americans say it is more important for President Trump and Republicans to now make the Affordable Care Act's insurance marketplaces work better (69%) than to continue plans to repeal and replace the law (29%).

It is also a significant departure from the 30 percent GOP approval for Congress from April to July. They say the GOP-dominated Congress has so far failed Americans.

"Democrats have given Congress fairly low ratings throughout 2017, ranging from 10% to 19%", the pollster noted. That figure holds across party lines, with only about one in five on each side saying they approve of Congress's work so far.

Most (57%) say Republicans in Congress should work with Democrats to make improvements to the 2010 health law.

The poll was "based on telephone interviews conducted August 2-6, 2017, with a random sample of 1,017 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 USA states and the District of Columbia". Sixty percent of Americans said that Trump and Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress, are now responsible for problems with the law, compared to less than half of that - 28 percent - who say the blame for problems with the law lie with Obama and Democrats.

Congress left for its August recess without passing any sweeping, comprehensive legislation, failing in its attempt to pass something on health care and leaving tax reform on the docket.

This month's survey again finds more of the public holding a favorable view of the Affordable Care Act than an unfavorable one (52% vs. 39%). The margin of sampling error for results among the full sample is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points, it is larger for subgroups.
